How to get rid of old CRT monitors?

Does anyone know the best way to get rid of a bunch of 15" CRT monitors? It seems that donating it isn't a viable option since many places don't want 15" monitors. Also, from what I've been reading, you shouldn't just throw out the monitors, due to environmental reasons (although I guess this may still be the most common way?). I just came across a few places that will recycle the monitors, but you apparently have to pay them (!) to do it.

If I break them, can I give them to you to fix (and keep...)? :)

Some businesses recycle them or reuse them. Call a local computer store and ask. Also, big cities have recycling plans for just technology stuff. Look it up on google.

**EDIT**

Or donate them to a local refuge.

Is this for a business, or home. If for business, you are allowed to put in regular trash up to 200 lbs a month. For residential, there are no restrictions. But if you have more than 6 or so, I'd suggest limiting to a few every pickup. You're trash service may have there own restrictions.

One great option is to take them to a local outdoor shooting range to be used as targets. :)

Another option is to put them out on the curb of a busy street two or three at a time. They will disappear and will more than likely be used for parts. You'd be surprised what junk dealers will pick up if you just leave it out.

Just put it outside on your porch or beside your car overnight (so it looks like you forgot about it). Somebody will take it for you.

Call your town. They usually setup designated days for drop off like monitors, etc. 2-3/year. Find the next date and dispose of it there and then.

Your city's hazardous waste disposale program. I was looking into when I thought our 32" CRT TV was dying. Of course, now it seems to be working so.....

Craigslist.

There's got to be one person out there who has a need for those monitors. You can sell them pretty cheap, maybe $15-20/each and sell them in lots or whatever. But do it locally to avoid shipping.

I'm sure your local Goodwill Thrift store would be glad to get them.
That is where I buy monitors for budget builds and freebies!

Goodwill and other charity do not usually take CRT, you usually have to wait for someone offering free recycle, like Office Depot to do it. Or you can pay a recycler a small fee (i.e. $5 each) to get rid of them.

I helped my company getting rid of 30 in Office Depot once, got to go to 5 stores with 6 co-workers and dump one per person per location.
