how to get rid of msn messenger 4.7?

i tried all the "hiding" reg things etc but every time i run msn messenger 6 and then close it, 4.7 pops up for whatever reason... :|

this has been happeneing since my roomate opened it once by misatake...

help anyone?

What Operating System?

If it's XP, Microsoft says do it this way.

I've had great success going to the run command and typing the following:

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %WinDir%infmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Click enter and you should be good to go.

In Windows 2k, find your sysoc.inf file in the Windows folder, open with notepad. Look for the following line.

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

Remove the word hide, leaving the commas, save the changes and it should then show in your add/remove programs now.

That's really odd, I've never heard anybody report anything like this: closing MSN Messenger should not trigger msmsgr.exe. My guess is that all the "hiding" reg things you've done has whacked your registry somewhere.

Also, please note: if you nuke Windows Messenger, you will find that many of the features of MSN Messenger will no longer work, like videoconferencing, app sharing, etc. I believe file transfer might also be whacked, in which case you won't be able to share the background of your conversation window (which uses file transfer).

If you want to do more than just send instant messages, my suggestion would be to re-install Windows Messenger and undo the reghacks. WM will automatically uncheck the its own option to run when Windows starts. If you're using SP1, you can remove WM from the Start menu via Add/Remove Components. At this point, WM should only auto-launch when opening Outlook Express, in which case you want to change Messenger settings in OE's Options as well in order to keep it as tame as possible...
