My house has a gas heater and thus it has a metal exhaust pipe that runs out of the top of my house. A couple of weeks ago a wood pecker has started to peck on this thing and it resonates though out my house every morning at about 5:30-6:00 am. Every morning all I hear for an hour is "bang, bang, bang, bang, bang". I go out there and it flies off then 10minutes later "bang, bang, bang, bang". I consider myself to be a humane person and would perfer not to harm it, but I'm on the verge of getting mouse traps and attaching them to the exhaust to get him good. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

wait out there all silent like with a BB gun till he comes back. A nice BB to the face should be rather discouraging.

If you find out, please let me know - there's one around here that does the same thing at my house. His favorite time is at the crack of dawn...not a nice way to wake up :p

That seems odd since the pecking thing is to get grubs out of bark. If it wasn't metal I would be wondering if there were some type of bug burrowing in the wood of my house.

Try wrapping a large enough piece of chicken wire or window screen around the pipe, far enough away that he can't reach the fashizzle vent pipe.

That shouldn't violate any kind of fire code.

Or trying animal control to see if they have a solution.

As a last resort, wrap some sod around the pipe >just kidding<

bb gun or pellet gun. seriously. All that wrapping junk is too much work and not enough fun.

Uhhhhh...... woodpeckers don't make "bang bang bang bang" noises for the hell of it... It's driving bugs out of somewhere. I actually think it's doing you a favor by alerting you to the fact that you have termites or carpenter ants or some other infestation around the pipe.

Read this - it works!

We had a damn woodpecker that was pecking the sh!t out of the wood gable of our apartment - our bedroom was unlucky enough to be right on the other side of that wall. We reported it to our management and the maintenance guy attached some of those *cheap* metal cake/pie pans that are kind of like aluminum foil but a bit heavier. They were somewhat of an eyesore but then again so are holes in the side of a building. The pecking stopped instantly - it was really weird. 6 months later and there still hasn't been a single peck since. Apparently he was a woodpecker professional, hehe....

I can take some pics tomorrow if I remember, and if there's interest.
