Fruit flies are a reall big problem at my work in the QA lab during this time of year. It is a clean environment, however the fact that it is air conditioned at 71º F in the middle of an otherwise hot/humid building draws the flies in and they multiply fast. Everyone in our dept are pretty vigilant at discarding their used food/drink containers outside of the lab and taking trash out regularly but we can only control so much. Alot of people are in and out everyday and of course they too are using our wastebaskets and apparently even the slightest bit of food/drink residue is enough for the flies to feed off of and all they need to do is look at each other to get pregnant.
The only thing that keeps them at bay is a fruit fly trap which is a cup containing a banana peel and apple-cider vinegar with saran wrap on top and a hole poked in the middle. It gets disgusting after awhile and you need to make a new one immediately after discarding the old one. We thought we had things under control a couple of times and we had a swarm within 2 days so the trap went back out.
Is there another solution that doesn't involve using a fruit fly trap?
