Is this what most people would do?

I just looked up StarTac and it's a long distance calling company. They've called before, according to my mom. I hope they answer the next call, I'm going to tell them that I will fucking eat their children if they call again*.

*edit = just so no one takes it the wrong way, I AM kidding.

Get one of those devices that plugs into your phone line and transmits a "this line has been disconnected" message when you get unwanted calls.

edit, get rid of the land line. Don't answer the cell unless you know them. Otherwise wait for the VM.

How do you NOT know about the Do Not Call registry.

He lives with his parents. I'm assume he probably hasn't worried about these things for very long.

To answer the question - yes it's free. There's also one to stop credit card preapproval mailings. Good stuff.

yeah, it works for telemarketers... but non profit orgs actually use that list to call people, so instead of getting calls asking you to buy shit, you get calls asking you to donate your money instead.

Had one telemarketer that would call everyday 1-3 times. I told them that I was on the do not call list and to knock it off. They stopped calling for one day. Two days later I blessed them out on the phone and said if they called one more time, I would sue their shitty little company.

The calls stopped

Reminds me of when I first switched to DSL and of course had to have the landline working again. I had an old phone plugged in, and it wasn't long at all before it was ringing fairly often. I disconnected it, only need my cell and it seems they never call cell numbers (at least not mine).

I recall someone using a time wasting strategy or talking crazy. If you have the time, try to waste their's because most have a policy of never hanging up IIRC. It reduces their chances of meeting call quotas, then they are less likely to sell the number to other telemarketers. YMMV.

Do not call list.

I used to get a ton of telemarketer calls...literally 3-4 every night but now I get none...as in zero.

Once in a great while we'll get a telemarketer call. I ask for their name, their company name, and their supervisor's name so I can properly report them to the FTC for violating the DNC...<click> they never call back...:D

Never answer the phone without first screening the caller. It is that simple. Let your answering machine talk to everybody first. Very few telemarketers will leave a message on a machine. Over time, they will stop trying. If someone you want to hear from calls and starts leaving a message then pick up but not before.

The only marketers who will leave messages consistently are politicos. Can't do much there. Those folks are so god damned egotistical they think you want to hear from them.

i wished that worked, i really do.

one option - say you don't live there, that you're
going to get the person who does live there, & put
the phone down. come back in 10 minutes & hang
it up.

i'm on the do not call list & still get a call about
once a day. i need to start keeping a log of these
calls & maybe get a phone that records conversations,
just using it when telemarketers call.

i thought it was about $400 per violation. wait
for B of A to call me 5 times, then head to small
claims.

I turned off my phone's ringer. When I get a call I checked the phone, it records who calls and\or their phone number.

I call back people I want to talk to.

My dads retired and he said he loves the telemarketers, but they hate him.
He doesn't yell at them and hang up.
He starts up whole conversations with them .
Like " whats the weather like where you are ?" Oh its raining here. "You know I once went there on vacation and it was sunny but way too hot", "Do you have any children, I have 5"
etc etc.

Salesman working on commission especially hate him :)
