How to get rid of a firewall for a router?

I want to play warcraft against other people on my router, but it states that there is a firewall on my linkysys router. How do I get rid of this? thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you want to connect over the internet.

There probably are 2 ways to do it. The first is to move your computer into the "DMZ" of your router. The second is to open up the ports you need.

Are you sure you're not running a software firewall instead?

You can either find out what ports your games run on and open the ports on the router OR run your computer as the DMZ host which is an option in the router. I do not recommend running as a DMZ host because you open yourself up completely to hackers

anyone know what port starcraft runs on? or is it separate for every machine? (forgive me if im a moron, i dont know much about ports)

choose your model, operating system, and then download the manual.

it should explain how to do both of the things michael said (dmz, and opening ports)

Yeah, just open the ports you need to play

The problem with just opening ports is sometimes Directplay is pretty random and has a huge range. If the games don't use Directplay, then it is easier. Just have to do a google search to find the ports to open.

I have a similar problem hosting games. I got all the ports I need to open (AOE2 - MS listed the ports intheir web site) but my router doesnt specify if I'm opening TCP or UDP (i just enter a port number from 1-2xxxx and pray to god). Didn't work though. 🙁 I have the netgear rp614

You need to open up ports 4000 and 6112-6119. for the computer you want to host a WC3 game one.
You'll have no problems once you do so.

I goto 192.168.1.1, my routers homepage, and then I click on the advanced tab, then forwarding. NOw I'm confused on what to do. I know the ports I need are from 6111-6119. If I lose security over this, I don't care, so if someone can better explain the dmz host thing, I could do that too.

I have the same problem with my Linksys router. I can't host any games or directly connect in IM. Supposedly you can't disable a router's firewall but only open its ports but how in the world am I supposed to know what ports a game uses? I play Quake III, RtCW, and Medal of Honor so do you know what ports these games use?

Also, my friend has a D-Link router that he gets on the internet with PS2 and he cannot host online games in Madden 2003 or Diablo II on PC. Any help with either problems is appreciated.

i got my linksys router working fine for hosting games..... took me awhile to find the ports you need to open up. With the linksys, you cant actually shut off the firewall, just open up the right ports. Find the ports, open and you will have no problems... Im a testament to that!

yeah, turning it off would be dumb, it is there to protect you
just open the ports needed for whatever service (in this case -> game) you need to let through

that would be like the bank manager saying "i can't get any money out of the vault, lets move it all to the parking lot " !
