How to get remote for cable to play with my speakers?

Not sure which forum this would go, to be honest. Mods, move at will!

So for Christmas we got the new speakers and also digital cable. I have everything wired through the new speakers (TV, Xbox, etc) but can't get the fancy new remote control for the cable box to control the new speakers. Suggestions? Thanks!

Do you have manual for the speakers or the remote. The answer that you are looking for, might be in there.

[The wireless remote included with the Z-5500 was a handy addition to the system. The Power button turns on the system and is indicated by the blue LED on the front of the console. The Test button verifies that each speaker is properly connected. Pink Noise is generated in 2.5 second intervals in the following order: Left Front, Center, Right Front, Right Rear, Left Rear and Subwoofer. Dedicated buttons for the Optical and Coaxial digital inputs are provided. The Effects button selects the sound effects and the Settings button adjusts the corresponding parameters. The Mute and Volume Up/Down buttons control the volume level. Separate Sub, Center and Surround level buttons are provided that make it easy for the user to adjust each speaker to the appropriate level. The Direct button selects the analog inputs and if the two-position toggle switch is set to the Stereo 1-3 mode, pressing the switch will cycle through the three sets of analog inputs.

Thanks for the replies. So you're saying that if the remote can't figure out the device by the "auto-search" method (where it tries to figure out what the device in question is) then I'm SOL? I'd rather fight with two remotes than shell-out the dough for something fancier.

Question: can I leave the speakers turned on all the time? (I don't mean the master power, I mean the power you can control on the speakers' remote)

I actually hav a similar prob that pisses me off

Just got a new remote for our cable box (1yr old destroyed the other one we ahd for the past 4yrs). Regardless, old remote worked great. Hit channel up/down it switched on the cabel box. Power on/off was the TV and Audio up/down controlled the TV volume. Life was grand.

So now new remote, everything works fine EXCEPT now the volume is adjusting the cable box volume (why there is volume on the box in the first place is beyond me... Im pumping and amped signal into a TV to amp it again?!!? ). So now I cant adjust the volume of anythig Im watching on my TV except cable. If Im watching a movie on DVD/VHS/Modded XBox the volume button does NOTHING since it only adjusts sound coming from the cable box itself.

HOrrible

Homerboy, get yourself the 5500 speakers... you can have all the volumes on the speakers' remote, at least. While I had hoped to get it all on one (hence this thread) it could be worse (your situation). The problem I've found, though, is that the volumes aren't well normalized. That is, if I switch from XBox (optical signal) to TV (via RCA cables, a separate input source) the volumes can vastly differ.

A propos, I'm thinking of picking-up a digital coax cable to connect the cable box to the speakers (instead of the RCA cables). The difference from the TV's speakers to the new ones is night and day, and I imagine with the digital connection it would be better still.
