This place I was hoping on getting my credentials for is either not real or soemthing else.

What are teh steps for getting a press pass. I have a portofolio that i have sent out. But either they are stringing me along or something else. I want to get back into the game of things and start taking pictures professionally.

There has got to be a place that has information on this. I wanna do events/concerts/sporting events (day time). So how should one approach this?

Well you have to work for a newspaper or publication of some sort - can be a school publication as well.

There is some school in New York that basically "sells" them - you pay them and they give you the stuff you need to get credentials. Kinda shady. I can't remember the name of the place.

All you need is a quality ink-jet printer, card stock, and access to a laminating machine.

With Adobe Photoshop, the sky is the limit.

So technically i could make a press pass for my blog?!

Technically, yes, you could make a pass for anything you want. I expect that it wouldn't get you anywhere, though, since it would be a lot like making your own driver's license. It might have your name and your picture on it, but it doesn't give you legal access to get behind the wheel (stage, endzone, etc).

And then reality hits.

Find someone/somewhere legitimate to shoot for and have them request a press pass for you. Local publications would be a good place to start.

Very shady. Credentials aren't something you can buy.

Well they own and do publish a magazine - so they really are a publication, but the whole point of their program is that you pay them and take some courses, then get a kit with credentials and such. I think you have to actually submit something to them every so often or something, but still it's shady.

I'm sure some people on this forum can give you some good advice. In the meantime, this guy seems to have a pretty good idea what he's talking about: http://www.dpchallenge.com/for...FORUM_THREAD_ID=225816

hey, thanks! (i'm that guy)

even though that was written almost four years ago (sheesh, time flies), the original premise is still true: credentials are earned, not bought. it really all depends on what it is that you want to do as to how hard you are going to get it.

the one thing to keep in mind about credentials is that they are not about getting you what you want; they are about photos that will be useful to the venue, and/or the participants, and/or the promoters, and/or the media. if you really want to be legit (and respected by working professionals), you use credentials to produce useful images, not to simply add to your collection of look-what-i-shots.

good luck!

Are you talking about the NYIP? (new york institute of photography)

They include a student pass with their program. I wouldn't use the term shady to describe their program. The materials and programs are great. Their student pass won't get you into anything unless you call ahead.
