I have a cable router with a firewall and it wont let me host UT games unless my friends connect to the routers ip. Then it is really slow and there is alot of lag. I have set it so that my ip is in the DMZ but my friends still cannot connect, is there a way to fix this or make it so that they can connect to the router and not get the lag? BTW it is a 3com router, and i have zonealarm, but i close that when i play.

What ip are you trying to get them to use? The router's ip is what Id think you would want them to try and connect to. As far as the lag, have you noticed any latency issues with your service?

Both ip's. The one for the router and my specific one with in the network and the only one that work is the one to the router. and yes i do have speed issues with my internet provider (comcast) if it isnt down then it is slow, but then again my friends have the same provider and live only about a mile from me, and he has a slower computer but it works great from his.

The ip your computer has is probably an internal ip address. Is it a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x? If so, it should not routed to the internet. That is why the real ip (the one your router has) is necessary.

Ok, my question was about latency. But speed issues could be a problem too.

Who knows how the network is setup and what is between your computer and his? Traceroute it and find out. :)

CPU speed wont make your internet connection faster.

He says that i have to get my ping to be 0 so that there wont be any lag. Is there anyway to do this?

Perfect ping times are a pipe dream.

Ping at 0?

You're going to have to be on that computer for that to happen. Even if you're on the LAN with the server you're going to run into ping times of around 5 or so. As for the speed issue with the server.... hard to host a server on a cable modem unless you have a really nice upload time. Far as I know most ISP's cap their cable up's at 128. Hard to run a server of more than 5 people on that sort of speed.

I am not trying to run a dedicated server. All i do is periodically play with a group of my friends after school. We just started it and i just built my first computer and i thouhg i should be able to host a game instead of making my freind do it b/c his parents limit his computer usage time alot.

In the UT server config you can hard set the bandwidth rate that each client gets regardless of client settings. You'll want to hard limit it to something low like 7000 bytes/sec or less.

Like n0cmonkey said, your friend needs to try and connect straight to your external, or router's IP address. If you go to www.whatismyip.com it will tell you what your external IP address is.

The easiest way to get the server up on the internet is just to DMZ the server's internal IP. The best way to do it would be to figure out what ports your UT server needs to have available and only forward those to the internal IP.

Your physical location will have a huge effect on your cable connection. In denser areas with more subscribers your rates and latency will be a lot worse than someone who lives in a less populated/less subscribers area.
