It seems that everytime I want to use VLC to open something I try to make it the default program. Yet everytime it reverts back to quicktime....why is this....? :(

click get info on a file with the file extension you want vlc to start opening> click open with; find and choose vlc > check apply settings to all documents like these.

Right-click and choose get info on a file type you want to open in VLC all the time (or Apple+I).

In the box that opens there will be a option that says something along the lines of open with... Forgive me I'm not in OS X right now so I don't know the exact wording.

Once you pick the program you want it to open with (you can pick choose other and browse to it if it's not in the default list), check the box below that that says something along the lines of 'Use this program for all files of this type..' or some such thing.

It should change it from that point forward.
