how to get OS on?

I just put together a system with an kt7-raid motherboard. the hard drive is in there, so how do I get the OS on? I set it to boot off of the DVD drive, but for some reason it won't; any ideas?
 
You will only be able to boot off of a Windows 98, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 CD. You cannot boot off of a Windows 95 CD. Microsoft did not start putting the boot image on their CD's until Windows NT 4 and Windows 98 came out.

You may be able to boot off of your Windows 98 Upgrade CD, but not the Windows 95 CD.

If you are still unable to boot off of the Win 98 CD, then create a DOS boot disk that has your DVD DOS drivers on it so you could install the OS from your DVD drive.
 
it's an oem dvd drive, so I have no idea what the drivers are...if I can boot off the win98 CD, can I then replace it with the win95 CD and install from there?
 
get a boot disk dude, have you considered installing linux? any flavor would do.




or honestly fork over some cash for win98se, i know ive seen if for cheap at the fs/ft forum.

the win98 CD I have is SE, but the upgrade. I do want to install linux, but once it works well with radeon cards
 
Go to www.bootdisk.com and download then make a boot disk. That will likely give you the cd functions of the dvd drive. You should then be able to boot the Win98se upgrade disc using the boot floppy. Just install Win98se and when asked, insert you copy of 95 to verify legitimacy. You should never need install 95 itself.
 
so I should be able to:
boot off a boot disk (once the floppy drive's working)
install win95
install win98SE upgrade
install win2k after
?

and about the hard drive: I booted off the win2k CD, I got an inaccessible_boot_device error, which, according to microsoft's site could be due to win2k not recognizing the hard drive. should the hard drive be ready to use out of the box, or do I have to partition it first? I have a boot disk that came with it to set it up, but my floppy drive's having problems
 
You shouldn't have to install Win95 first. I have the Win98 upgrade (Not SE so I need a boot disk). When I've reinstalled all I have to do is boot from the disk, run setup from the Win98 CD, then plop in the Win95 CD as proof. It should ask you for that. No big deal.
 
wait, what CDs are bootable? win2000 is, win95 isn't, I heard win98 is and I heard it isn't, I heard win98SE upgrade is and I heard it isn't...I prefer booting directly off the CD because getting my DVD drive recognized with no OS from a boot disk has been a hassle so far
