How to get on the race track?

I've always been a fan of BMWs, and i'm thinking of picking up the M Roadster a few years down the road. Well, i'm not going to spend a fortune on a car just so that i can stare at it - it would be a lot easier to just buy a Civic and rice it up :D So i'm thinking of racing it, but i'm not quite sure where to start. Is it possible to get some sort of a membership at a racetrack, so that i'm allowed to race there? Perhaps even take part in amateur races? How exactly is this done?

SCCA Auto-X

I usually co-drive with my buddy in his yellow FD RX-7 with R1 package and all the goodies. It's an awesome experience racing around the cones trying to get a quick time and it's the easiest way to get into racing (other than 1/4 mile straight line stuff). You can run anything you bring, even a stock Dodge neon. All you hafta do is sign up and they'll send you the info in the mail so you can apply for your SCCA license. If you have a driver's license, you can get an SCCA license. The cost is extremely cheap and it's a good wholesome way to get on the track and push your car legally. There is also a new program targeted at youth designed to get kids who were street racing into legal racing. Check it out, I highly recommend it.

If you are in Ontario, Solo1 and Solo2 is your thing.

Or you can goto Lapping Days at Shannonville Racetrack, Mosport, or Cayuga. You can also join one of the many BMW clubs and go racing with them (I'm sure they have track meets). You can also join the BMW Driving school.

I hope to be at Shannonville in the summer putting my 240SX thru the curves.

Yeah, bike racing looks awesome too. It's the way to go if you can't afford a sports car. Better to get a good bike than a crappy car.

Here is the 1st thing you have to ask yourself... how much are you willing to spend in a single weekend race event on your car?

Rent a track. They are not as expensive as you may think. Get a few buddies together.

Be aware, most tracks require the minimum of a roll bar to even be concidered on the track.

Uhh, it's the Sports Car Club of America, which means it automatically excludes you Canadians. ;) :p
