How to get Java working on Mozilla?

Hi, I just downloaded Mozilla M17...but I'm having trouble getting Java to work. When I view a page with Java applets(namely my own page), I get the usual Netscape plugin icon where the applet should be. It brings me to the JRE download page. The thing is, I already have JRE 1.3 installed, which is exactly the same version as the one they're telling me to download. Just for the heck of it I downloaded/installed it again, but still no go. How do I get M17 to use the JRE to interpret Java applets?
