My wife lost the keys to a file cabinet many years ago, and the key that the locksmith cut for it using the code didn't work.

Does anyone have any experience busting into these things? It doesn't matter if it remains undamaged.

On an episode of House he reached under the cabinet and did something to a metal rod that unlocked all the drawers in the cabinet. Not sure if that is real or not.

Drill the lock out.

hmm, would you drill around the lock to pull it out, or actually try to drill into the lock?

With some cheap filing cabinets you're able to do that, but most filing cabinets are better built than that.

Drill right through the middle of it, you need a fairly large bit though.

How to get into a locked filing cabinet:

step 1: open cabinet
step 2: get in drawer
step 3: push yourself in putting your hands on the drawer above (or top of the cabinet) to shut it.

You can probably force the drawer open prying it with a thin piece of steel, likely breaking the lock in the process.
If the drawer underneath can be removed, you may be able to remove the rails supporting the locked drawer, and tilt it to get past the lock.

just drill the lock'

~3/8" bit -> center of keyhole

drill until it unlocks

NOTE: some locks uses extremely hard steel and cannot be drilled or cut with most drills
i.e the loops on Master paddlocks (sp?) cannot be broken by anything I own

ended up prying it open with the back of a hammer. I really wanted to borrow a power drill but couldn't get one until tomorrow :(

Thanks folks!
