How to get IMAP GMail and Apple Mail to do this?

So I currently have my Gmail account setup to check my university POP account. My Uni pop account is also setup as the default account in gmail when sending messages. I then have Apple Mail setup through IMAP with my Gmail account. Therefore, I'm able to check my university account, being hosted on gmail, through Apple Mail and have them synced.

For the most part it works well. However, I do have one problem. Sent mail using Gmail appears in my "Sent" folder in Apple Mail just fine. However, sent mail using Apple Mail does not appear in my "Sent" folder in Gmail.

The only way I could get it to work is to set Apple Mail to send email through smtp.gmail.com rather than my university server. But the problem with that is that mail is being sent out with my gmail address rather than my .edu account, even though my university account is set as default within gmail.

Basically, I want to be able to send mail in Apple Mail using my university email account and to have that sent email available from within Gmail as well.

I hope that was understandable.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I think the easiest way to do this is to create a rule that for every outgoing message from your university account is copied to the sent folder on the gmail server. I do not know how this will affect threading of those emails though. Otherwise, you're SOL. I hate how gmail handles "multiple accounts." They say it's for spam reasons I think, but I can send as whoever w/ my fastmail account and there is no easy way to get my actual fastmail account vs my alternate account.

It mostly bugs me with how outlook treats gmail email... they plop my gmail account first and don't emphasize the send as account as much.

I think your best off using multiple accounts within your apple mail. This will allow you to still sync your gmail and school mail online, but just distinguish it remotely from home. I know, this probably isn't what your end goal was, but you are probably going to have to wait for updates to make that happen.
