How to get headphones to work

My old speaker had an input on one of the speakers to plug the head phones in. These do not. Is there any way to get the head phones to work, other then unplugging the speakers from the sound card and plugging the head phone directly; the cable is too short as well for this.

Will both the speakers and headphone be on all the time? Will this affect the quality of the sound (for the speakers) if the head phones are plugged in?
