on monday, i went to a dim sum place for lunch in richmond with a female friend. the place was packed to the rim due to some sort of asian baby shower party. we pretty much got the last table in the same room.

at anyrate, our table was right next to the kids table from the party, one of the kids was just running around the table, having a good time until i guess, his dad, stopped him, gave him a stern look and yell out something in cantonese. And like german, cantonese is at the top when it comes to instill fear when it is being used for scolding.

the kid sat down and looked sadly in my direction. i gave him a sympathy look and a shrug. i mean, i'm all for laughing at other people's misfortune, but a kid could be scarred emotionally if i did that. he cracked a smile and figured that i was his only friend there.

the dim sum server was very slow due to the party, and i was getting hungry and thristy. i started to grumble to my friend after fifteen minutes. i guess at this point, the kid heard me and he took the 2 liter coke from his table and gave it to me. i guess i shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. besides, refusing it might be traumatic for a kid his age.

when the servers started to haul out plates of dumplings to their table, the kid, would sneak a little metal container here and there filled with various dumplings to me. (note to self, stay away from chives dumpling next time)

i had a big lunch that day, i only had to pay for a pot of jasmine tea, while my friend paid for her roast pork with egg noodles.

they didn't run that place right...

when you get the food from the cart, the server should mark down size small, medium, or large

when they pick up the containers, they should double check.

guess you won :p

yeah, they mark down the price on a card when you order, they don't check after you're done. you have to take the card to the front to pay.

In the past, the waiter would count how many dishes were consumed and the bill was tallied up. I was told that my grandfather and father(over 70 years ago in China) would toss a few plates into the man made lake surrounding the dim sum restaurant to lower their food bill when the check came. I was told that this restaurant got a lot smarter after the lake was drained...

funny, we always got it from my mom's friend that worked there and would direct extra random plates our way.

What's a good, cheap dim sum place in NYC? I've never had any, but they sound good.

That kid sounds like he's pretty cool. Considering he'll be a national spelling bee champion or something in 10(?) years...maybe you should have made him a life-long friend.

Wow. That kid FTW.

Misleading title though; it's unfair to operate under the assumption that there'll be a cute kid places to sneak us food.

i'm not a good judge of age when it comes to asians, maybe 10?
yeah, those metal dim sum steamers are hot and cools off fast.

parents are socializing with others, they had a lot of food... crabball claws, sharkfin dumplings, ribs with black bean sauce, pan fried noodles with sea food, shrimp roll, turnip cakes, steam pork buns, shumei, shrimp dumplings, egg custard tart, oyster dumplings, fried taro balls filled with meat, tofu skin with shrimp, fried tofu with minced seafood fillings....etc
