How to get file manager to associalte .mkv files with VLC video player?

JEDI

Lifer
kyrocera Hydro Icon running android 4.4.2.
it does not come with a file manager (or at least I cant find it). 😱 🙁

so I downloaded File Manager+, which is an adfree app.

but I cant get it to play .mkv files automatically.
I have to long press the ,mkv file, then select the VLC video player to play it.

any help?

What is the default app if you click on the MKV file directly? You need to go to Settings - Apps (maybe called 'Manage Applications' in Kitkat?) - (that default app) and hit 'clear defaults'.

The next time you click on the MKV again it should ask you what you would like the default app to open it with, and simply choose VLC then.

don't know what the default app is.
when I short press on the .mkv file, it says application not found.

I went into Apps and cleared ALL preferences.
still getting "application not found." 🙁

Why bother going through the File Explorer at all?

VLC will find and add those videos itself. At least it always has with mine. Assuming the *.mkv isn't holding some backwoods format no one's heard of, that is.

because my home screen can only show 12apps and I have to swipe left to get to the 2nd screen where VLC is.
ok, I guess I can swipe left and select vlc as a work around

what is a launcher?

This is a topic where a file explorer is not a solution. VLC will find the files just fine. OP just needs to learn how to use their phone, organize their icons, etc. I don't even think a third-party launcher is necessary.

I'm sure that the default launcher that came with the phone is capable of creating folders and having multiple screens.
