How to get DOS to recognize new Intel chips?

For background refer to old thread " How to get USB 2.0 to work outside of WinXP"

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505 Intel(TM) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2 GHz. In one partition it runs Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1. In the leading partition of the hard drive it runs MS DOS 6.22. In Win 7 mode it recognizes it's internal CD/DVD and any external USB device connected. When booting into the DOS mode it will not recognize any internal DVD nor USB device, no matter which drivers I try. (The only Config.sys setup that finds a drive is device={path}atapi.sys which results in a “Drive not ready”, “Abort (A) Retry(R)” and then only after aborting gives “No Interface Card Found”, “Check cables or power cord”. All other device = statements in Config.sys provide a Drive not Found type statement. However the Phoenix BIOS version 1.5 finds the internal DVD and any device connected to a USB port. Device Manager shows a IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller to be an Intel(R) ICH9M E/M SATA ACHI Controller, and the DVD/CD -ROM to be a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ880ES (FW version 1.80).

I have a similar type ofproblem when booting into MSDOS using the usbaspi things from Panasonic and others found on http://www.hiren.info/downloads/dos-files in that it finds the 6 Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Host Controllers (2934 through 2939) and two Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Controllers (293A & 293C) but hangs up the system when it starts checking for USB devices and never finds any USB devices nor completes.

I also have an older Sony Laptop set us with multi boot partitions for DOS, XP and 7. It has different controllers and recognizes it's internal DVD/CD. It does go through a DOS boot searching for USB devices without hanging, but never finding any external USB devices.

Hopefully someone will be able to offer some suggestions.

AFAIK, USB had not been invented when MS DOS 6.22 stopped developing drivers. It also has a very small max hard drive sense.

MS-DOS 6.22 was the best version of DOS they ever made. They finally got everything they... ummm... borrowed from DR-DOS right.

I run a number of legacy DOS programs from the command line under XP, including those requiring ANSI.SYS. Some of my progs don't like the current version of ANSI.SYS so I use a third party ANSI.SYS substitute that doesn't balk at various versions of DOS or the XP command line.

It's not exactly the same. Some of my favorite DOS commands aren't the same, and some of my old batch files don't work correctly, but I've found work arounds that handle the job. I'm hoping my settings carry over to the command line under Win 7.

LMK if you want to try my command line settings, and I'll post them.

I think corkyg is right. DOS predates USB so there would be no way to load a driver to recognize it unless some ambitious DOS addict was able to write one.

The BIOS should have something like "USB legacy mode" that essentially presents USB devices as legacy devices under OSes that don't support USB. Maybe that'll work

What are you using DOS for? If it's for running old games, you could try something like DOSBox.
