Continuing with an analysis of the objectives and powers of advertising as intentions to destroy self respect, it is always a good idea, I think, to build your ad on per-existing prejudice. Like any self congratulatory conservative good looking person, I am also gifted by birth and walked down a paved with gold privileged white race person.
I went out to lunch with my nephew who is Indian, to an Indian restaurant and was served by an Indian waiter whom I found to be exceptional as a human being, profoundly respectful of me as a fellow human being. I commented as much to my nephew and he told me it was to be expected because I am white, that Indian people generally unconsciously view white people as superior and that what I was seeing was this unconscious deference. It was a thought provoking experience but it did not reduce my feelings toward that waiter. What would the world look like if everybody felt deference to everyone else.
So if, even on an unconscious level, one shows a widespread bias favorable to the lighter the skin tone the better, any ad that might play even remotely to that bias would have a racist appeal and an implied superiority to such a product.
Personally I find favor tan skin as the most sexually appealing, owing to past conditioning. I was born in Hawaii and there even white people turn brown. But I can still vividly remember making having a reason to knock on a stranger's door, and an Irish looking young women in a bath robe with mid chest skin exposed answered my knock. Her skin was ivory white interlaced with blue veins and I almost fainted with shock at what happened inside of me. I saw the cherry that sits atop the Garden of Earthly Delights. Was all that the result of blue veins under ivory skin or was it my Mothers arms I long for. Beats me but she was sweet to behold.
