How to get better FTP speeds?

I have Fios with 35/35. My friend also has the same. But when we transfer files to each other via FTP with programs like Filezilla Server or Xlight, we only get 4-5 megabits. Programs like AIM are much faster but I would like to increase FTP speeds because its more reliable.
I will also be moving around in the future a lot and I want full speed access to files on my computer.

Thanks

In the Filezilla options, set it to use three or four streams/threads. It can send one file for each thread concurrently.

You might be able to do more, but start with four as a baseline.

Also FIOS may throttle FTP ports 21/20. Does connecting internally to your FTP show marked increase in speed? Also are you sure you are not confusing megabits and megabytes? Filezilla shows MB/s not Mb/s and 35Mb/s is about 4.3MB/s.
