I have a D50 with a 50mm 1/8f lens and the kit 18-55mm lens.

I want to take the best landscape/coastal shots possible. Some of the shots I have taken so far look a bit hazy.

What are the best settings I can use in terms of Fstop, lens, etc.

Polarizer will really get the sky popping (always try to shoot at a 90 deree angle form the sun for best results). A neutral density filter might also help.
On a bright day you can use the 1/16th rule for good results. Remember that using a polarizer drops your shutter speed down by 1 point.

The 1/16th rule is on a sunny day, anything in the sun is set at f1/16 then your ISO speed for the shutter.

basically what phiur said. polarizing filters are the biggest thing. I also prefer wide angle shots, but focal length is more of a personal preference.

edit: sometimes i also like to shoot with the camera on or very close to the ground. gives it a pretty neat effect
