How to get audio from Hauppauge 150MCE into Movie Maker?

Anyone know how to do this? I'm trying to capture old VHS tapes. For capturing software I'm just using Windows Movie Maker, 'cuz it's free and I've never done this before, and I figured it would do the trick.

So my situation is: when I try to capture video, I can select the composite video input of my Hauppauge 150MCE, but I can't select the AV input for audio. In fact, my only choice for Audio input is the RealTekAC97 of my MSI Neo2 Plat mobo. Shouldn't there be a selection for the Hauppauge for audio input somewhere?

Below that, there are some selections for Line-in, Microphone, things like that, but nothing that sounds like the AV inputs of the Hauppauge card (and nothing that's worked either yet).

Am I just missing something completely obvious? Do I need different software? If possible, I'd prefer not to spend any money unless it's absolutely necessary.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

DaveSimmons, I suppose I may have to do that. It just would be niftier if the AV inputs on the back of the card worked. I can't figure out why they don't.

Thanks airfoil, but I think that I don't need that though, unless I am misunderstanding (or unless you're thinking my card might be malfunctioning). I am using the existing set of AV inputs on the back and don't need another set. I just want to figure out how to select those audio inputs in Windows Movie Maker.

I have the Hauppauge 250 and it's got audio capture built into the card. Snapstream Beyond TV3 uses it beautifully. Windows Movie Maker doesn't even recognize it as a capture device, so you're one step closer than I am because you at least get video.

As for the Line-In suggestions, I'm not sure if I could get the Line-In on my soundcard to work along with the video even if I wanted to. During setup, Beyond TV3 pops up a message "using built in audio from capture card" message when it previews the channel selections and never lets me choose the audio source.

Windows Movie Maker might expect it from the Line In though, so I would suggest trying that. Hopefully there won't be any sync issues. Just make sure it's not muted or turned too far down in the volume control recording options.

In the meantime, I'll look further into getting Movie Maker to play nice with my card. If I find a way, I'll post back.

Thanks calvinHobbs, but I just didn't want to have to buy an adapter to go from whatever the end of the AV cords are to the 1/8" or whatever it is of the mobo line-in if I didn't have to. I'm just poor and lazy. And I think I got a workaround now (see below if it interests you).

NateSLC, Windows Movie Maker recognized my 150MCE as a video capture device, but I never could get the audio to work for it, even fiddling with the Line-In option in the audio menu. (I'd still be curious if you find a way to.) I ended up downloading Hauppauge's capture software (it's free) and using that, and it seems to be working very well for converting VHS to digital (at least, it gets the audio too). I'll probably just stick with that for the capturing. I do need to find some software then to edit the MPEGs. Any advice for that? Anyway, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the help.

I did do a bit of research and didn't find much, but I'm by no means saying it's not possible to use the Hauppauge card to capture with Windows Movie Maker.

What I've reverted to personally is my Beyond TV setup to record most things. It's kind of a pain, but I get really good quality.

For me, it seems the PVR applications (like MCE, SageTV and Beyond TV) work perfectly with my Hauppauge card. My All In Wonder never had an issue with Windows Movie Maker, but had issues otherwise with the previously mentioned software... Ulead and Pinnacle DVD authoring apps also give me issues on the Hauppauge and All In Wonder cards.

The Win TV app that comes with the Hauppauge card should work well. I tried it initially and didn't have issues. Let me know if you have success and if the quality is up to par.

I use WinTV2000 (included with my 250PVR) to capture and then Nero 6.6 to edit (NeroVision)

Have you tried Intervideo WinDVD Creator or WinDVR etc...you doing mpeg1 or 2?
I use WinDVD creator mostly..hey man if you've got an old earphone somewhere...you could adapt it with your AV cable...

NateSLC, it looks like the WinTV2000 is going to work well. It seems like the quality is fine and it has audio, so it'll work for me. Thanks man.

Thank you Sid, is NeroVision a part of Nero's burning suite? I've been wanting to pick that up anyway, I may now have more reason to.

calvinHobbes, I've never used WinDVD creator or WinDVR. Are those free software? I should probably just not be so lazy and go do a google search. You know, I'm not sure what MPEG it's recording as. It's the default recording quality, which it lists as "DVD Extended Play." The file shows up as an MPEG file, does that mean MPEG 1 by default? The resolution is listed at 720x480 or some such. I'll see if I can find out for sure when I get home.
