How to get around college firewall?

My college decided to deprive everyone using the network of many useful things. Namely netmeeting and napster (and every other file sharing program but gnutella!!). So how do I get around it? I'd love to be able to use my webcam to its fullest potential, and I'm dying without my free music. Anyone got any ideas?

hehe good luck trying to bad gnutella...its impossible to block by design. But its sloooow, unreliable and its slim pickings....BTW, if anyone is thinking of going to suny stony brook, DONT! Its like we're living in the ghetto here. The internet doesnt work half the time, when it does it barely even works, anything useful is blocked...not to mention waterbugs in the room, closet doors that fall off like avalanches of reinforced steel (yes, steel closets), broken curtains, showers with so much water pressure they bruise you, no cold water, floors so hot it feels like youre walking on hot coals....but the coup de grace....first day i got here the toilet was clogged...took them a week to fix it, during that time I had to go downstairs and take a dump in the public toilets...but after they unclogged it, there was a stain on the rim of the toilet that refused to come off. It must have been created by a godlike piece of crap that refuses to leave because a month later, its STILL there...and someone stole my damn soap!! arggggh!!!

Make friends with the main IT guy... yah, the fat one with the ponytail... and ask him to help you out. They all hate the schools they work for so just say something bad about the administration and you're golden. Bring a Little Debbie snack cake and some Mt. Dew with you for a bribe if you need it.

Where's SUNY stonybrook? I went to school @ Canisius in Buffalo, NY, is that near stonybrook?

Theres more than enough bandwidth problems around here that even that biggest prick of an IT manager wouldnt give me any special privelidges. I'm talking about inconspicous (or extremely conspicous, if the need arises) hacking to get around the ridiculous restraints here.

try changing the port number for napster, just might work

well get a job with the school pc support. That is what I do. My work computer is outside my school's firewall so I can download anything I want. I then run an FTP server off the machine to get the files on my computer. If the school admin has any brain you will not get around the firewall. If you do then he will be able to see it and quickly close down the method you are using.

good old sparky.. they done a lot of updating to sparky.. so i gotta check some stuff out..
maybe you can go next door and register another nic card using your suite mates account incase you get busted.

Won't napigator let you use rogue napster servers on different ports?

Sucks about what your school is doing, do a lot of people not share on the LAN there?

Let's just say this is the cheapest school.

When everywhere was on ethernet..

SUNY SB has UNIX SLIP dial up... 14.4k on campus. & It's BUSY all the time, so you gotta hit redial or get a dialer.

The past 2 years, the MP3 flood gate put a tremendous strain on resources. They started to block everything.

BTW, BigDee, are you using netmeeting to dial out or using it to receive calls ?

I was able to go out but not come in.. even with pcanywhere. I never gotten the chance to use pcanywhere on 53 udp/tcp..

maybe you can piggy back on some other ports... try port scanner and see whats open..

The problems started when they gave the h/g quads ethernet this year. Now the school is overloaded. I'm using netmeeting over ICQ, no other method will even connect. I cant see any way to change the port on netmeeting.

LOL slave driving my ass. I work MAYBE 30 minutes of real time. On occassion I work for like an hour straight. I am technically on the clock for about 5 hours a day. I don't get paid all that well but for an average of 30 minutes of work a day, I figure I get paid well. I get paid to do what I would be doing at home anyways. Surfing the net and playing games.

they just blocked all our ports here at UCLA. they tripled our bandwith to the school last year, and now they throttle it. I was on a cable modem last summer and well that was at least 10 times faster.
