so heres the deal:

my sister has the original iphone and i have a blackberry. I want to try her phone out for a few days before i make my decision if i should get an iphone or not. When i take her sim out and put it in my Blackberry it isnt a problem, but when i take mine and put it in the iphone it wont let me do anything unless i activate it in itunes.

the phone is using version 3.0 and is a first gen iphone

Im guessing i need to unlock the phone for this to work? Or do i not need to because we both have ATT. If i do need to unlock is there any risk?

You don't need to unlock (since you are on AT&T) but you do need to activate it (as you've noticed). You can sign up and activate it using AT&T and you have 30 days to try it out. Or you can jailbreak and "hacktivate" it (which is still legal under DMCA exception #3 - at least until Nov. this year when it expires). If you want to go the jailbreaking route be advised that it can void the warranty on the phone and AT&T has been known to crack down on iPhone users on AT&T who are not using an iPhone plan (which is what activating does). If you want to activate, plug the phone into iTunes and fill out the contract info. If you want to jailbreak it, google iPhone dev blog and follow the links to download "redsn0w" on the page.

Yes you have to unlock, which redsn0w should let you do.

I wouldn't have thought it would need to be unlocked. He's using an AT&T SIM... That said, unlocking is easy enough with redsn0w - just check the box.

What does it say in the upper right left corner? Does it say "No service"? Or does it say AT&T? Have you tried powering the phone on and off? I would guess so since you had to DFU it for Redsn0w, but it never hurts to ask.

If you dial *3001#12345#* what does it say under "Cell information -> Equivalent PLMNs" and Service Cells? Are they blank or are they filled in?

im gonna try unlocking when i get home later. when it asks me what to install im going to check unlock, but should i check cydia even though its already installed? and what about ice or whatever the other app program is? is it worth it?

it says no service in the upper right. I tried turning it on and off a few times but it made no difference.

I dialed that number and this is what i got:

mobile network code: unknown
mobile country code: unknown

in service cells i have:

area code: ffff
cell identity: ffff
BSIC: ff
mobile country code: 65535
mobile network code: 255

You probably need to put in the name of the Blackberry APN into the Network settings field - the iPhone defaults to the Apple plan's APN.

Go Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network

in the APN field, you want to put in the APN for AT&T's Blackberry plan. Searching on google turned up a whole lot of possibilities, but I'm not sure which ones are out of date or not. You'll likely be leaving the user and password fields blank. In the APN field try:
proxy
wap.cingular
wap.cingular.com

See this page:

Alternatively, google around "APN blackberry".

alright im not sure if its because im using 3.0 but i have no option for cellular data network. Under network im guessing it should look like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2283 but im missing 3G(because its a 2G iphone), but also im missing cellular data network.

I also read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2283?viewlocale=en_US which at the end of the article says: You cannot change the information in the Cellular Data Network screen unless you have an authorized, unlocked iPhone or your carrier allows editing the APN settings.

My phone is unlocked so why cant i change the settings?
