Greetings forum dwellers. Next week I'll be upgrading from Win98SE to Win2k Pro. I have a bunch of data saved using MS's backup program. What is the best way to get this data into Win2k? The backup programs are different, file system is different, and I have only the one machine.

Tentative plan: dual boot Win98 & Win2k, restore backup into Win98, copy to Win2k partition, backup data on Win2k partition, then blow everything away and do a full Win2k only install, finally restoring the Win2k backup. Please tell me there's an easier way!

Thanks in advance.

I seriously considered replying to your query in 3 parts, I was afraid that I would see
a ton of your messages if no one replied to you in time, talk about information overload!

I DONT believe you can restore 98 MS backups in Windows 2000,
here is a relavant article.

1. buy a 2nd hard disk FAT32, basically copy all your stuff there and use it once you install Win2k,
expensive.

2. borrow a hard drive, and do the same as #1, sure, doable,

3. buy backup program for $60 (possibly cheaper) called Backup MyPC (formely Veritas)
here.

4. best of all! download #3 for 30-day fully functional trial here!

Of course, there is a catch, you still NEED a tape drive to backup stuff.
Maybe steal one.

Please ... no more blank messages now!

Best Wishes!!

Just kidding. Thanks for your reply. I like option 4 best since all the others require actual effort. I don't understand your comment about needing a tape drive though, it looks like that backup software will do CD-RW backups.

Besides, I just paid for an Anandtech subscription and I like to feel I'm getting my money's worth :)

Ah! There you go. I was not sure what you had, yes a CDRW will do it. Just remember, I am paranoid with backups, you may want to be absolutely sure and try to restore or at least read your backups.
Maybe even make like 3 copies or something.

Best Wishes!!
