How to get a system to run with only a power cable and ethernet calbe plugged in?

I have a old PIII machine that I want to make into a file server. Is there a way I can only have a power cable and ethernet cable plugged in and manage it remotely? (not requireing a monitor keyboard or mouse) This is hardware/software I guess. One thing I am particulary worried about is booting with no mouse or keyboard.

What OS?

Almost all OSes have an equivilant remote shell. *nix uses SSH, MS uses Terminal Services, plues there are others like VNC and Secure CRT.

Make sure your BIOS is set so it does not halt if there is no keyboard. Otherwise you will be fine. Most server run in this configuration known as "light out."

Well I don't know what OS yet since this is an Hardware forum I don't think i can ask but i will anways hehe. What os can i run with this config and do a "remote desktop". I will be using windows to access it. Here are the specs: Pentium III 800Mhz 256MB of ram and a 60Gig hard drive.

IntelMan, you could try doing it with Windows XP Pro. I run a small SETI box 24/7 and I just use Remote Assistance to log into it. Pretty easy since you don't need a keyboard/mouse connected to the computer. With Remote Assistance it's like the keyboard/mouse are connected to the comp. You'll need XP Pro on the machine that you are using to control the file server and just XP Home on the server itself...
