How to get 6.1 or 7.1 EAX game audio to a digital receiver?

Is there a way to get an Audigy 2 Plat to deliver surround game audio to a digital receiver with 7.1 sound?

Would the optical port work?

No, it only passes stereo. The digital outs only work if you're outputting in Dolby Digital, your receiver doesn't know what to do with the digital signal unless it's reprocessed. So you'll only get 5.1/7.1 in movies, stereo for games and music.

Best to use the pre-amp inputs on your receiver and use analog cables.

Oh crap, this is what I was worried about....

So basically, I would need to use a lot of mini-jack to RCA adapters to get surround sound in games?

Yup. That's what I did with my receiver (Onkyo 502), but with 5.1 audio and an Audigy 2 ZS. It works pretty well. Just note that you'll have to set the Bass Redirection/Crossover setting in the Creative panel because the receiver settings won't affect it (it's just acting as an amp at this point). Some have had problems with the crossover setting not doing anything, but it seems to be working fine on mine. If you do have a problem you'll have to get the kxDrivers.

Do you get any noise because its not digital?

If you get a DDL card it will work, but you'll be limited to EAX 2.0 because Creative is the only manufacturer that has the upper levels I believe.

Non-DDL cards like the Audigy2, 4, and X-Fi would only get you surround sound from games in analog mode.

Since you have analog connections on your Onkyo, might as well use those.
If you already have that A2 platinum, that would work perfectly well connected to the 6 channel direct input on your receiver.

You just need some adapters and then run RCA cable.

Of course, but you'd have to be using high-end equipment to notice it. Unless the brands "Krell" and "B&W" mean anything to you (and are in your price range), don't worry about it. 🙂

You can't really escape that interference. A DDL card is also going to introduce impurities because of the reprocessing.
