How to fully install cygwin, and how to install gcc so it runs without cygwin

Hi - I battled with this a year ago and somebody finally showed me how - and now my cygwin install is both out of date and is crashing occasionally, so it's time for a reinstall. Can somebody remind me how to do a *full* cygwin install? I get to the screen where you're supposed to choose packages - and I remember it was something completely unintuitive to do a full install - but I can't remember what it was.

Also - is it possible to run gcc under windows xp without cygwin? I still want to install cygwin as I use it for other things - but my memory is that it's possible to run gcc under dos. Is that correct? How does one do that?

Thanks!

Is that what is needed? I'd like to be able to do two things:

A. compile really basic programs that run under dos

and

B. compile programs that come complete with header files and all that stuff

It looks like it will be acceptable - you should be able to compile programs that'll run under the Win32 command line. From their FAQ
MinGW ("Minimalistic GNU for Windows") refers to a set of runtime headers, used in building a compiler system based on the GNU GCC and binutils projects. It compiles and links code to be run on Win32 platforms... providing C, C++ and Fortran compilers plus other related tools.

OK I'll take a look at that then.

But does anybody know how to install cygwin? I just can't seem to figure it out - it would seem easy - but it isn't. It's some wierd option, I just don't remember where that option is.
