How to format my Mac HD?

My internal Imac HD failed. I bought an external, installed the OS on that. When I boot up now, the old hard drive still has stuff on it. Also, seems like the latest Snow leopard updates are being pulled from that HD...as after a clean install/set the external to boot drive....no snow leopard updates popped up.
How do I format the Internal HD? I went into disc utility, and would not let me format it.

You may have to unmount it first.

wait....

Maybe I didn't understand you... your internal drive has failed and you want to format it (the failed drive) and are having problems doing so? If it has failed, then I guess no one can help you format it. If you want to make certain no one recovers your data then you can disassemble the drive and slag the platters.

The internal HD is failing. I do not want to use it at all anymore. I want everything installed/running on the external HD

I went into disk utility. I formated the internal, and did NOT select GUID. Its formated, nothing on it. I installed Snow Leopard on the external. Now when I boot, I get the ? box like its still looking at the internal drive. Ideas?

If I unplug and replug the firewire external in on bootup, works fine. For some reason, on initial startup, the firewire hd doesn't boot up. Very strange. Unplugging/replugging in fixes it. Annoying to say the least.

Sounds pretty irritating. I can't rightly think of why you might need to shutdown and cold start often enough to be an issue, but you must have a reason.

I use CMD+OPTION+<DISK EJECT> to put the computer to sleep, moving the mouse or pressing a key wakes it up pretty much instantly.

Hold down Option when starting up and you will be given a menu to choose what drive to boot up. Once you get into OS x select your boot drive.

It's like the external HD isn't detected on initial bootup. When I get the ? box, If i unplug the firewire drive, replug it in, its detected and works fine. Brand new drive. Wonder if there are issues with firewire and latest installment of Snow Leopard.
