how to format my hd?

I need some help on how to format my harddrive. I have had a lot of problems with xp and I just want to reinstall it completely. I have tried to repair it several times, and boot from my xp disk, but nothing has worked. The first time I tried to repair xp, it changed from fat32 to ntfs right after the disk check. I am new and have tried f8 at the startup to load from the cd but it doesn't work. I don't know how to just erase everything and start from scratch, without buying another harddrive.

win xp pro
athlon xp 1600
quantum ultra 160 hd
sb live value
geforce 256

Your windows xp cd is bootable. Just make sure that the system bios has the cdrom being bootable before the hard drive, no need to press F8. It will just say to press any key to boot from the cd and from there you can format using ntfs. If you want fat32, a dos boot disk is required which you can download from www.bootdisk.com

If you are having that many problems you should download the diagnostic utility from maxtor and do a check on the drive itself.

Also to add to what skip said. Boot the xp cd and it will go through loading drivers. You will be able to format just before you get to the install.
