How To Format Broken HDD???

I have a HDD (IBM 60GXP) that i have to RMA, my only problem is that i have over 50 gigs of info on this HDD that i'd prefer not to disport to IBM or Newegg (personal financial info, software/movie copywrite infringement, 😱 ) Is there anyway that i can make the data on this drive unreadable despite not being able to access it? Whenever i try to get into windows it begins to make a cricket noise accompanied with squeels and squeaks until i get an error message, also when i try to format it, i can never get it to start, it just stays at 0% formatted.....any ideas?? Maybe a Giant Magnet???

Arh, another dead 60GXP. Well done IBM.
Did you try the DFT(Disk fitness test) from IBM. You can use that to wipe out(set all to 0) or low-level format your drive. Actually I will be doing the same after I ghost my 60GXP to a Maxtor 540DX.

Fow99, thanx for the advise, however, i tried to use the DFT to erase everything and all it came back with was "Defective Drive, Technical Result Code for RMA: 7000750B", is there anything else that i can do?

You can also write all zeros and then make partitions (I'm not sure if you can do anything with your drive right now)

i've heard that you can put a hard drive in the freezer to get a short run off a defective hard drive.

dont know if it will work long enough to format the drive though ?

ask around they had a topic on it here at one time but seems like it was ten minutes or so.

hope this helps

mike

Can you still access your file under that condition?

Do that if you can, or do a low-level format.

Problem solved..i think, thanx for the advise, i did a low level format and reinstalled XP, i'm currently in the process of using "ERASER 5.3" to remove the reminents of any old files.....I hope this works....thanx guys...

goto radio shack and get a electro bulk eraser.. the heavy duty one... i got one and it can pick up like 20 pounds.. it'll total that hd..
