How to fix a drill hole in the wooden door?

They make spackle for wood.
Depending on where it's at (not visable like behind door hinge):
drill it out to a larger size, insert a piece of dowel with some elmers on it and cut it off flush.

The hole is actually only on one side. It's about quarter of an inch in diameter. The door is painted and there's some chipped paint around the hole.

Spackel is perfect. Might take a two or three applications to fill the hole, but it will eventually. Use a putty knife to scrape the excess off while it's "wet", or you'll be sanding your ass off. Spackle is much less sandable than drywall compound. Sand it flat after each application. You will have to paint it of course.

So regular spackel would work in this scenario? Or would I need a special "wood spackel" like somebody suggested?

If the hole is deep, you could use wood glue. Fill it in and put a piece of tape over it - wait a day then when it is dry, spackle the rest.

Spackle would probably be fine, but I think wood putty will probably hold up better for something that gets banged around like a door.

Only reason somebody suggested wood putty, is so you could match the existing grain in the wood. Since it's painted, it doesn't matter. Either one will do the job, but paint would probably stick better to the spackle. The spackle will dry within a couple hours, so you can apply several coats in a day.
