I just got a sony DVD-ROM drive from New Egg. It reads CDs but not DVD. I know it's the DVD player because my dual layer Lite-On plays movies just fine.

Any way i can go about modifying this drive? I have other DVD-Drives laying around that i can use for parts.

Heavens NO! IMO repairing a Optical drive from spares is out of the question. I would check for a firmware update to see if it fixes the problem..if not...RMA it.

The cost to RMA the DVD-ROM dive is more then the value if the drive so im just going to keep it and play around with it. Just need some suggestions as what i can do with it.

I have a Dual Layer NEC drive with a broken frame. Do you think it's possible to switch optical lens?

Is updating the firmware difficult and risky?

No ... you can not just "switch the lens" ... among other things
they are not the same from make to make and even if did fit
it probably will be out of alignment ... as to updating the firmware,
once you locate and download it, it is no harder than doing a BIOS
update ...as to risk, there always is .. but it usually goes ok
