How to find out which internet carrier my coffee shop uses?

Find an IP address of one of the systems and look it up. If you have a device on the network you can run a trace route out to google and see who's systems it passes through on the initial hops.

Connect to their wifi, go to www.ipogre.com, and then take that IP and search it in the whois box at www.arin.net .

Or the more funny way, turn your speakers all the way up and go to www.moanmyip.com instead of ipogre.com.

You can also use trace route (tracert google.com), and see what it shows.

Step 1: Go to Coffee Shop and connect to their Wifi.
Step 2: Go to http://www.ipchicken.com/ and copy the IP Address it shows.
Step 3: Go to http://itools.com/tool/arin-whois-domain-search and paste the IP Address
Step 4: Profit

Pretty much this.

One I like to use is whois.sc, as you can just type in whois.sc/ipaddress. So ex: http://whois.sc/10.1.1.1
