How to find out if a business or brand name is taken?

I am looking at picking a name for a business/brand name to put on a few things like shirts and such but I want to make sure its not taken before I use it.

Doing some google searching hasn't turned up anything but I'm skeptical that no one else would have thought of it.

Is there any sort of database for nation wide business's that I can search to find out if its being used in any other markets or brands?

Check your Secretary of State's website. They should have a search.
