How to find drivers....

Isocene

Senior member
I got a friend with a Japanese notebook that i recently put a fresh install of XP on. She need the laptop to connect to the internet through the old school modem.

The problem is, windows doesnt recognize the device. I cant figure out how to find drivers for it since i dont know the model or anything.

The model is Toshiba Dynabook E6/415CME

Any ideas?

If the modem is internal to the notebook and original equipment, you should be able to find the driver on Toshiba's site. Are you sure it has a modem, as on some (even if there is the phone jack for one built into the notebook) the modem was on a miniPCI card and was an optional upgrade. So check the spec sheet for your notebook on the Toshiba to be sure it was standard and not optional. I have a miniPCI modem here for a HP notebook but you might be able to use it. If you want to try it, I could be persuaded to part with it.
If it has a standard serial port, it might just be easier to buy an external modem. They can be found for under $20 with cable drivers and all.

I appreciate your help!

I had went to driver guide and downloaded the toolkit thing and it identified the modem as Intel AC97 something something.

There were no direct links to drivers from driverguide so i tried googling the something something and came up with a few things that installed to identify the modem but ahd a yellow exclamation mark next to the component. So it didnt work.

She said she might have the disks that came with the laptop so when she comes up next time I was going to look through those.

I tried looking through the toshiba website but its all in Japanese and I didnt feel like using my brain too much. I was a bit drunk when i was trying to fix it.

I thought I might look for a usb 56k modem if all else fails...
