how to find a mental health doctor

it really depends if you hava health ins or not, what the problem is, who you feel most comfortable talking with.

I have seen both men and women and i personally like a woman, just because i can relate to her a bit better.

I would try and find someone you know that has had a positive expericence with a good Dr and get a reference from them.

If you dont know of any, if you have a primary care Dr. i would ask them who they know.

I would only use the internet or yellow pages as a last resort to find someone.

And, also, at times its hit and miss because i have found that you just mesh better with some Dr's than others!

good luck

Sex would be who you're most comfortable with, and I agree with the sentiment about finding one from your primary doctor. I think in Canada it's the only way to get a psychatrist (referral). Re psychiatrist vs. pscyhologist, only the former can prescribe drugs, so that's something worth taking into consideration.

Yeah i was just checking my insurance company online page did a search for my zip code i got like 20 hits just in my town.

I need to find one like very fast like in the next two weeks. I applied for a job and was turn down, but i can appeal it but need to get myself a psychologist/psychiatrist to evaluate me and then evalutate the paper work from the job i applied to appeal and i got 30 days to do that. actually now its more like 20 days.

i just talked to my insurance, and they stated that i should pick a doctor first and then make an appointment and after that call back for precertification to approved that.

if approved it would 15$ per visit copay.

so now still leaves me with how to pick one.

I would go through your Doctor because if he sends you most insurances will cover it. If you go yourself u r probably screwed in terms of insurance.

I called my primary doctor, unfortunately they were not much help, they said to call the number on my insurance card and then i asked if they had anyone they recommended and they just gave me the name of a clinic and gave me the name of a doctor, but they didnt sound very sure about it, anyways i looked up the place on my insurance website but the doctor names doesnt come but another one but it's not a pyschologist/psychiatrist but a clinical social worker.

I thoguht thats how it would go... i truely found that its trial by error most of the time. it may take a little longer but it will be worth trying several out to find the best one that works for you

i kinda got a deadline to this, i have until january 7th.

going to start calling places to see if anyone got any openings and if they can help me out with my sitiuation.

If you can't go through a doctor, get recommendations from close friends. If you can't ask your friends, just cold call. I got lucky and ended up with a good one. Also, depending on what you are needing to go for, I am male and wanted a female. Also, I wanted someone with a Ph.D. You can inquire about their education w/ the receptionist as well. And don't worry if you don't get them when you call. Most are in sessions and most do not have a receptionist, but they will return your call.

Good luck!
