How to fill out a form from a pdf file???

I am having problem filling out an application that I dl from the web which is in pdf format. I know that you can directly fill out the application in acrobat reader (or am I wrong??) cuz my friends has done it. The problem is we can't figure out why he can on his reader and I can't on mine. Bascially we are doing the same thing....clicking on the 'palm' button, but he can go to a specific field ...i.e. 'Last Name' and enter his name. I don't get a cursor button when I try to click on that specific field. Anyone have any idea????

You friend must have Adobe Acrobat, while you on the other hand, must have Adobe Acrobat Reader. Reader has never been able to edit pdf's, hence the name, Reader.
