I need to extract small portions (1-3 min of duration) from several DVD movies. I'll be giving a lecture next month and want to use those portions as illustrations to my lecture. They need to be in something playable with WMP or similar players, DivX is also OK. I looked on a few web sites, but most of them seem concerned with copying or converting to VCD the whole movie. Any pointers to instructions and suitable software will be greatly appreciated (or if you have personal experience, even better)

just follow the guides for ripping / converting to avi. Then use VirtualDub on the AVI file and cut it. Don't forget to install the MPEG2 codecs if you want to play them in media player.

Sometimes I just want to burn a few select chapters from a DVD and make a mini-DVD (cDVD) out of it. I use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode to select the chapters and audio tracks. Then I use DVD2One to process it so the BUP and IFO files are correct. That might not be "by the book," but it works for me.
