How to equalize music sound

i have many different songs downloaded or recorded from different sources meaning that the quality is all different and the noise levels are also very different. Sometimes its extremely quiet and then i turn up the music only to have the next song be super loud. Is there a program that can equalize the music to stabilize the loudness?

Your audio drivers might have loudness equalization built right in as well, mine have a big old check box to turn it on when I go into the settings. It doesnt alter the source files, but helps you not break your speakers or your ears.

I don't think that any program could do this without doing damages to some of files-songs...

mp3 is already a wrecked/alternated music and to allow another program to "equalize" volume, it might mean to turn a music piece into a garbage...

Try, just make a copy before doing this.

Personally I have always used MP3Gain

There is probably others as well.

Another vote for this one! It senses how loud it will sound to the ear and you select the % of loudness you desire. It will do single files or groups.

I couldn't believe how well and easily it corrected the exact problem you describe for my quiet files. I've found soundforge generally to be a very trusted source.

And, how do you THINK, how it's done - to equalize music sound? no bits/bytes are taken off and no bits/bytes are added?

nothing is changed to the bits that describe the audio, its just a tag that tells the audio player how much to attenuate the volume per file

its too bad you didn't think to actually go and read the wiki article posted in the first reply, here's a pretty relevant bit: "ReplayGain utilities usually add metadata to the audio files without altering the original audio data."

there, your bits are still identical yet smaller thanks to a tag, which can be easily changed or removed

MP3Gain edits the MP3, but in reversible way. ReplayGain, OTOH, doesn't touch the audio. Hence, lack of reading.

There's dozens of ways to do exactly what the OP asked without altering a single bit of the source file. On the OS level, on the driver level, on the software level, *or* on the file level. All without "turning the file into garbage."

We did think how its done, and yes bits and bytes are altered. They're altered specifically to change the volume levels of the audio file while keeping the audio data itself otherwise intact. Your fear is essentially the audio version of "OMG dont open a text file and change the text because the whole thing will be corrupted." It's just not true.

Thanks for the replies i used mp3gain and it did exactly what i wanted. So just giving this a bump to say thanks and hopefully help anyone else who may be considering what to use.

On a side note im using my music pieces as background sound for a cafe that i run. So the sound doesnt need to be lossless, it just needs to sound pleasant. With all the other background sounds in a cafe along with people talking to eachother not to mention that I didnt see the point in buying bose or other high end audio equipment the need to preserve every detail of audio seems to me in my situation to be of non importance.

I've used MP3Gain for years... love it. I have a very specific process for adding any music to my music collection, and every song goes through MP3Gain as part of that process.
