How to enable Windows Media Player 6.4 in Win 2K to play MPEG2(i.e. VCD .DAT) files?

1) Is there any way(w/o using 3rd party software) to use the default WMP 6.4 in Win 2K to play .DAT files from a VCD?
2) Also, how come whenever I try to copy any file from the VCD to my hard drive, I get the "I/O device error" message?

Thanks.

WMP6.4 does play VCD. Just that the *.dat format isnt 'registered' . Just Open the *.dat manually or drag those *.dat and drop them over to WMP6.4 and they will start playing.

Biggs,

You need to claify here bud...In your Subject line you say MPEG2 (that means SVCD). But in your #1 question you say .dat from a VCD.

Which is it? In any case...

- If it's VCD (mpeg1), then what xtreme2k says will do the job.
- If it's SVCD (mpeg2), then WMP CAN'T play it (or at least without help from something else and I'd like to know what it is if someone knows!).

To enable DVD (MPEG2) playback in Media Player 6.4, alter the Registry as follows:

Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Settings]
Value Name: EnableDVDUI
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: yes or no

You'll need to have the MPEG2 codecs installed (e.g. software DVD player) for this to work. I can't say I have had much success with this though!

If you want play vcd .dat file. Open wmp6.4 and use 'open' menu on it.
Well, the best way play SVCD(MPEG2) file is burn it and play w/DVD software player like WinDVD or PowerDVD. But if you install those dvd player software, wmp6.4 will play mpeg2 files not from svcd. You have to use vcdgear to convert.

Wait a minute, you're a Win2k user and you've never right clicked on a file and used "Open With!" Where the hell are you from dude?
