How to enable vsync in Half-Life?

I couldn't find anything that worked on Google, so here goes...

I jumped on the 98-cent Half Life deal on Steam that was running a few weeks ago, and the only major problem I'm having with it screen tearing. There is no option to enable vsync in the game settings, and I don't have the Catalyst Control Center installed to force vsync (I've read that might not work anyway). Previously published console commands like r_displayrefresh and vid_wait don't seem to be valid commands in this version of HL. I was wondering if anyone here had run into a similar problem and had a fix.

I'm running this on Vista x64 and an HD 4850 with Catalyst 8.11 (non-hotfix) drivers.

Sorry to pick the collective pc gaming forum brain on this issue instead of consulting Steam support. I was too lazy to create a support account and also figured I'd get a quicker response here. Thanks.

you can force the refresh rate by right clicking on the game, chosing properties, launch options(or something like that) and write in the textbox "-freq 60" or whatever refresh rate you want

You might have to use control center, also, there is an unofficial hd model upgrade pack floating around, it helps make the game a little more bearable
