How to Enable Text To Speech for Mac OS X

Mac OS X provides an interesting feature wherein the selected text can be read when the user presses some already defined shortcut. Primarily, after setting a keyboard shortcut for this operation, the Mac system can read aloud the selected text. You should again press the same shortcut to stop the speech. Here is how you can easily enable the text to speech feature for your Mac system.

Step 1
Open ‘System Preferences’

Select the apple icon that is located at the top left corner of your Mac screen. You will find the list of system related settings. Click the ‘System Preferences’ option to view all the system preferences options for the Mac system.

Step 2
Select ‘Dictation & Speech’ Option

You will notice the various settings options in the System Preferences window. Select the ‘Dictation & Speech’ option to change the settings related to speech and voice.

Step 3
Enable ‘Text to Speech’

In the Dictation & Speech window, you can change the settings related to the speech and text. Click the ‘Text to Speech’ tab to enable the conversion from text to speech. Select the ‘System Voice’ option and chose the voice from the drop-down menu. You then choose the ‘Play’ button to play the chosen system voice.

Step 4
Hit ‘Speak selected Text When the Key is Pressed’

You should enable the checkbox of ‘Speak selected text when the key is pressed’. This will allow you to change the key that would allow the text to speech conversion easily.

Step 5
Click on ‘Change Key’

Now click the ‘Change Key’ option to change the key that would control the text to speech conversion on your Mac OS X.

Step 6
Now type one or modifier key combination to hear the computer speak the text that is selected. Then click the ‘OK’ button.
