How to enable DHCP server in Windows XP Pro?

The title says it all. How do I enable the DHCP server in WinXP Pro? If I enable ICS on a dialup connection it starts the server, but if I don't have a dialup connection, I can't enable ICS. How can I manually start the DHCP server? Thanks.

A simple answer would be to create a dummy dialup connection (set it up to dial your house, or 1-800-flowers or something). Then turn on ICS and set it to never dial a connection (turn off remote control of the connection and turn off automatic dailing).

You don't have to use the connection to have DHCP on. Just setup the connection and ICS and then DHCP will automatically start when the machine starts so that in the event you need it, it is ready.

I need to be more specific. The machine doesn't have a dialup connection because it doesn't have a modem. =) Thanks for the idea though.

Is XP Pro capable of running DHCP apart from ICS? Seems like that might be a typical "Server edition only" kind of thing.

M$ doesn't provide a DHCP service with Win XP Pro (or Home...). You need to run Win 2K Server or Win 2K3 server in order to install/run the DHCP service.

Better off spend $20 on Router and use it has a DHCP Server.

The $5 will be a waste.

You will get a "Quriky" Network going the ICS-DHCP way. ICS is very limited in it scope of IPs.
