How to enable audio through HDMI cable using Nvidia HD audio from Graphic card ?

Hello,

OS: windows 7 7601
Speakers: Logitech Z63 2.1

I am using Nvidia GTX 460 GPU and want to use Nvidia HD audio disabling my onboard realtek audio.

I use HDMI cable with my viewsonic VX2753mH monitor.

I can see the enable Nvidia audio option in windows sound playback options but as soon as I enable it, no sound is audible in my windows, only realtek audio works.

I am not able to use Nvidia HD audio.

Also, need info which option Onboard Realtek HD audio or Nvidia HD audio will sound better.

Thanks

Won't work. Nvidia audio will only work over HDMI. That is, either your monitor needs to have speakers in it or you need to connect to an HDMI AVR.

What you want to do is impossible with your current setup.

I have audio and headphone female input at the back end of my monitor, so can I use Nvidia HD audio if I connect my speakers with monitor directly?

Possibly. Not 100% sure. But I somehow doubt the DAC in your monitor is any way better than the onboard Realtek DAC. I'd bet $100 you wouldn't hear any difference at all.

Just saying, if thats how you are setting it up, thats pointless to use nvidia audio. Like this guy above me said, there would be no difference, just plug your speakers into your motherboard and use realtek audio. Howweever, if this is about a cable length issue where it would be much simpler to plug the speakers into the monitor, which would be an odd problem unless your computer was somewhere far away in a shelf or on a desk then it would make sense. Steps to turn nvidia audio on as an audio device: right click on your windows desktop, click nvidia control panel. Click in the left toolbar what my screen is showing and in the drop down menu next to HDMI (in your case) select your display. Dont follow along with this picture for devices. It says no audio capable display because im using DVI on 2 monitors and have my own speakers.

So next to HDMI it should say the monitor your using.

Thanks for the resolution but for me it just does not display "set up digital audio" in my Nvidia panel.

Is there any other way I can use digital audio with my config ?

I want to use digital audio coz the my motherboard and Nvidia both support it, if the hardware supports it then why not to use it some how ?

What the previous posters are trying to tell you is that since your speakers don't have a digital input it's not going to make any difference. Even if you could manage to send the audio from your monitor to your speakers it has to be converted back to an analog signal, hence the comment about the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). Unless you upgrade your speakers to a system capable of accepting a digital input via HDMI what you want is not going to work. Also, if you had a system capable of digital audio there wouldn't be any difference between Realtek HD Audio and NVIDIA HD Audio. Digital is simply a stream of 1's and 0's. What matters is the source material, i.e. - Dolby Digital, DTS-Master, True HD, or the bitrate of an MP3.

I have DVI to HDMI setup from my NVIDIA 460GTX to my LG HDTV and I have Audio through the LG Speakers and the Speakers connected to the LG TV. Whoever says DVI doesn't transfer Audio hasn't tested it fully. In order to get the sound you must do the following...
Access the NVIDIA Control Panel -> Setup Up Digital Audio
Here you will see the TV's Audio. As long as it is here selected then go to the following...
Sound -> LG TV-3 and enable it. That's it. You now have Audio through the DVI to HDMI cable. Any questions ask me. 🙂

It's not that HDMI has sound, and DVI doesn't, there are no pins or wires for sound in a HDMI connector/cable. DVI and HDMI are identical pin-wise - when you send video, there is some "blank time" where the video card outputs blank pixels to start a new line and for syncronization purposes. Someone smart came up with an idea to use this unused time to send audio (there's bandwidth to send 7.1 easily) and this is what HDMI does. The only reason GPUs don't output sound through DVI is of a legal nature, it's patented to be used by HDMI only. Not sure about nVidia, but ATI has some approved DVI->HDMI dongles that will support audio (the dongle maker pays the royalties, so it's legal for the video card to output sound through DVI), you would also need newer drivers. That would be the easiest solution, these cost <$10. You didn't mention which card you have, if it's older (and for nVidia you'd have to check if they have something similar), then this might not work.
