The built-in firewall of OS X is not enabled by default. Unlike in case of Windows, a Mac user needs to activate the firewall manually from the System Preferences. Here’s how you enable and disable the firewall in Mac OS X.
Step 1
Select ‘System Preferences’
From the dock at the bottom of the screen, select ‘System Preferences’, and a pane opens up at the centre of the screen. ‘System Preferences’ enables you to modify system settings to customize OS X to your convenience.

Step 2
Select ‘Security & Privacy’
Look for ‘Security & Privacy’ option from the applications displayed on the pane, and select it. A panel will open up.

Step 3
Select ‘Firewall’
Click on the ‘Firewall’ tab from the panel. It will display the current status of the firewall; for instance, in this case, the default firewall is turned off.

Step 4
Click on the ‘Lock’ Icon
Navigate to the bottom-left corner of the panel, and click on the ‘Lock’ icon. A box will pop up requesting you to enter the ‘Username’ and the ‘Password’.

Step 5
Select ‘Unlock’
Enter the 'Username' and 'Password'. Click on ‘Unlock’. Consequently, the tab ‘Turn On Firewall’ gets activated.

Step 6
Select ‘Turn On Firewall’
As you select ‘Turn On Firewall’, the firewall gets enabled. Similarly, if you were to disable the firewall, you had to select, ‘Turn Off Firewall’.

Step 7
Select ‘Unlock’ Icon
Select the ‘Unlock’ icon to lock and secure the changes you made to the firewall settings. Now, your firewall is enabled.

Following the above mentioned steps sequentially, you can easily enable and disable the Firewall in your Mac OS X.
