LOL. That's the first time that I've ever heard "use firefox" to be the wrong answer to something. :p

(Hint: Firefox does not support ActiveX - at least not out of the box... thankfully.)

Ugh, yes it does, it's just disabled by default.

edit: And my point was that for the many people that have personally asked me how to fix gmail not working in opera, it works fine in firefox, hence my answer, use firefox.

It's a better browser, period.

I'm an FF user, I'm testing Opera right now

It's okay, but FF is way better

When trying to login to my gmail account with Opera:

Gmail requires ActiveX controls to be enabled

Your browser seems to be Internet Explorer, and ActiveX seems to be disabled. Gmail requires ActiveX to be enabled in order to operate.

To use Gmail, enable ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer. You can do this by going to the Tools menu, selecting Internet Options, Security tab, Internet zone, and either select the Default Level, or selecting Custom Level and scrolling down to "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" and selecting Enable.

After enabling ActiveX controls, try again.

Guess you're out of luck.

The problem is you have opera lying about itself. It's telling gmail that it is IE when it obviously isn't. Quit lying about the user agent and you'll probably get in just fine.

Yeah, I use gmail on outlook anyways so I guess this really doesn't matter.

Don't need outlook, Opera has built-in POP abilities. Faster to check mail if your browser informs you you just got mail. The next version of Opera will automatically set all the settings correctly for gmail accounts.

My apologies, I was wrong, the correct answer (as it always seems to be) indeed was "use Firefox". I was referring more to the "needs ActiveX support" question, and overlooked the simple matter that GMail should not require that. If Firefox does indeed "support ActiveX out of the box" though, I would like to know what config settings to change to enable it. AFAIK, you still need to download and install some modified .DLL files in order to get that to work, along with some config changes. Commercial Netscape releases are different, they do indeed support ActiveX out-of-the-box, primarily for hosting the WMP ActiveX control. If for some reason that open-source Firefox has also changed in this regards, and supports ActiveX intrinsically as well... I don't believe it yet, but that would be highly disturbing if so. Many people use it to get away from ActiveX. I would stop using it if true. Please post more details, thanks.

It doesn't require ActiveX. Period. The end. No need for more discussion.

So you are going to tell Google they are liars? Saying they don't require activex is obviously not correct. Identifying as Opera doesn't work, the page won't load.

Yes. The site does not require ActiveX. If it did I could not access it in Mozilla on OpenBSD, or Camino on Mac OS X, or netscape on Solaris, or Firefox on Linux.

Do you get the same error when Opera's user agent is set correctly?
