Everytime my computer reboots after I have installed another hard drive I have to either hit F1 to continue or F2 for setup. I go to setup, esc and save, but still everytime on startups and reboots I get this F1 and F2.

Also, How do you eliminate that irritating screen where your name pops up and you have to click on it to go forward. I am the only one using the computer and it is a waste of time and effort.

hm...i think if you turn off user switching or w/e in the control panel it'll take care of that...i don't remember exactly it's been so long since i've set up my computer like that. as for the other one, my socket a rig used to do that, i just dealt with it lol.

Thanks, it just happened one day and I have no idea what, or how, it did happen. I have 5 computers that I set up and none do this but the one I use the most.

It's always helpful if you mention the exact system (model number) you are having problems with.

Go to control panel --> user accounts ---> then delete the asp.net account. This is not needed and is added by microsoft.net framework.

You'll now boot straight into windows.

Problem computer is a Dell 400SC, 3.2ghz, 2 Gb Ram, ATI 9800 Vid, 40gb/200gb/300gb internal drives, 500gb external drive, all slots filled.

I just had to install a new ethernet board as the onboard ethernet quit working.

Computer boots up and first it does it detect thing and finds the 2 big hard drives working off a single PATA 133 board, and then I get the F1 to continue, or F2 for setup. I can do the F2 thing but it makes no difference and I get the same thing the next time the computer restarts.

Hope this helps.

In the dell bios, under hard drives, ide devices have to be set to 'none', not auto for any ide port you are not using.

Keep in mind that it could be something simple like your CMOS battery needs replacing. From the Dell documentation:

System Battery
A coin-cell battery maintains system configuration, date, and time information. The battery can last several years.

The battery may need replacing if you have repeatedly reset the time and date information after turning on the system or if one of the following messages appear:

Time-of-day not set - please run SETUP program

or

Invalid configuration information -
please run SETUP program

or

Strike the F1 key to continue,
F2 to run the setup utility

Here's the link to the doc: http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe400sc/en/it/m0009c60.htm

I own about six Dell 400SC computers. I've seen that error before. It was because of the drive controller setup in the Dell. Take a look at the BIOS and take a hard look at the drive controller and boot order areas.
