How to dump XP home ICS?

Trying to set up 2 boxes to share cable connection and files. Using d-link
di-604 router. Win 98 box connects and surfs fine. XP box pings self but
cannot ping router (error code 65). d-link tech support advises that only a
firewall or ICS can cause this error. Firewall is not checked. ICS was
previously configured. It has been changed, in theory removed, yet it is
still running. Type sc queryex sharedaccess at dos prompt and sure enough,
there it is. Please help me get rid of this before I tear out the little
hair I have left.

I assume you have access to the Services in Administrative Tools. Go there, Stop and Disable the ICF/ICS service.

Or just go make sure it is disabled. Use Windows Help, search for ICS, and reverse the steps needed to configure ICS in the first place. Probably need to reboot after that of course.

Also, I found this., so if you have ZA you'll want to shut that off as well since you no longer should need it.

Or it may be that the router is denying ICMP responses. That'd give you the same error apparently, so it's not JUST that ICS or a firewall causes it.

Update: Well, I reinstalled zonealarm and all my problems are gone. It appears it wasn't completely uninstalled and the leftover bits were screwing me. Now I just have to figure out how to dump the miserable thing. MS add/remove software obviously doesn't do it. Thanks again for the info.
